A bit about me, Vilma Reynoso, and why I wrote this book:

As a child, I grew up consuming my father’s Argentine barbecues every Sunday. Usually ill with colds as a child, I suffered from chronic sinus problems, asthma and respiratory ailments, and was overweight.  As a young adult, I suffered with horrible PMS, fibroids, chronic fatigue, anxiety, mood swings, asthma, intestinal problems, sinusitis, foggy thinking, and even depression.  After evaluating my health and the deaths of both my parents due to heart disease, I became motivated to change my life, one step at a time. I slowly began to change my diet from meat-based to vegetarian, then to vegan, and finally to a mostly raw vegan diet. Healed from most of my ailments, I have never looked back!

Natural Cleaning Solutions

There is one thing that I have always enjoyed – a fresh and clean home. No matter where I live, I make sure my humble abode is comfortable and clean. Like most people, I used harsh cleaners like Lysol and Ajax to scrub my counters, windows, shower and bathtub. I loved the vibrant smell of a freshly-cleaned living space! I still love the smell of a clean home, but now I have become aware of how toxic and damaging using these products are for my health and for the environment.  I found a new, very simple, and non-toxic way to clean! Below is a simple recipe for a toxic-free cleaning solution to be used on counter tops, bathroom sinks, bath tubs, showers, windows, and most unclean surfaces:

Simple and Fresh Toxic-Free Cleaning Solution:

Supplies:

½ to 1 gallon of white distilled vinegar

Peels from your favorite citrus fruit such as oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit, tangerines, etc.

Mason jars

Cleaning spray bottles

Water

Process:

  1. Place cut up fruit peels into jars and fill to top
  2. Fill mason jar with vinegar and seal with lid
  3. Let sit for two weeks
  4. Open jar and remove fruit peels
  5. Dilute cleaning solution using a 1: 1 ratio of water/solution
  6. For tougher stains, do not dilute solution
  7. Place solution into spray bottle
  8. CLEAN AWAY!

I keep a few different solutions in my kitchen and bathrooms. If I want a fresh lemon odor, I use the lemon solution. If I prefer my house to smell like oranges, I use the orange peel solution! You can also combine fruit peels when making your cleaning concoction, like using both grapefruit and orange peels in one mason jar. It is a fun and easy process that will not harm your living space or your health and leaves your home smelling fresh!

Below are a few other home cleaning recipes I found online:

Furniture Polish: Mix 1 teaspoon of lemon juice in 1 pint of mineral or vegetable oil. Apply a small amount to a clean cotton cloth and wipe wooden parts of furniture.

Rug Deodorizer: Deodorize dry carpets by sprinkling liberally with baking soda. Wait at least 15 minutes and vacuum. Repeat if necessary.

Mothballs: Use cedar chips or a sachet with any or all of the following: lavender flowers, rosemary, mint, white peppercorns.

Whitening Scouring Powder: Combine 1 cup baking soda, 2 teaspoons cream of tartar, 1/8 cup borax, 1/4 cup grated lemon, orange or grapefruit peel and mix well. Scrub using a damp sponge.

Glass Cleaner: Combine 1 1/2 cups vinegar, 1/2 cup water and 8 drops citrus essential oil in a spray bottle and shake well. Spray and wipe with a dry cloth or towel.

Why not Recycle?

I had the pleasure of taking a walk through my neighborhood yesterday. It was trash pickup day. I noticed many items in trash cans such as books, cardboard, clothes, games, wood, etc., that could have been recycled or donated. It made me ponder whether people know the importance of recycling, so according to RecyclingRevolution.com, here are just a few reasons why we should recycle:

  • The more people recycle, the cheaper it gets!
  • Recycling creates 1.1 million U.S. jobs, $236 billion in gross annual sales and $37 billion in annual payrolls.
  • Public sector investment in local recycling programs pays great dividends by creating private sector jobs. For every job collecting recyclables, there are twenty six jobs in processing the materials and manufacturing them into new products.
  • Thousands of U.S. companies have saved millions of dollars through their voluntary recycling programs. They wouldn’t recycle if it didn’t make economic sense.
  • Every ton of paper that is recycled saves seventeen trees.
  • The energy we save when we recycle one glass bottle is enough to light a light bulb for four hours.
  • Recycling and composting diverted nearly 70 million tons of material away from landfills and incinerators in 2000.
  • Recycling benefits the air and water by creating a net reduction in ten major categories of air pollutants and eight major categories of water pollutants.
  • In the U.S., processing minerals contributes almost half of all reported toxic emissions from industry, sending 1.5 million tons of pollution into the air and water each year. Recycling can significantly reduce these emissions.
  • Manufacturing with recycled materials, with very few exceptions, saves energy and water and produces less air and water pollution than manufacturing with virgin materials.
  • It takes 95% less energy to recycle aluminum than it does to make it from raw materials.
  • Every bit of recycling makes a difference. For example, one year of recycling on just one college campus, Stanford University, saved the equivalent of 33,913 trees and the need for 636 tons of iron ore, coal and limestone.
  • Recycling prevents habitat destruction, loss of biodiversity, and soil erosion associated with logging and mining.

Blessings come in many forms, and those blessings are not always how we imagine them to be.

Raw Vegan Health

I have been reflecting this week on my life, especially about the last few, very full years and the changes that have occurred. Prior to those years, however, one of the biggest blessings (if not the biggest) of my life was given to me, unexpectedly. My baby girl was born. I was now a mother and had to learn to pass on what I assimilated and learned from this life to this precious human being who depended on me for everything. That responsibility sometimes still overwhelms me, but I have learned that the Divine is always there to help me. However, the gift that would come from this infant being, was something even more priceless!

They say that sometimes life hands you foreshadowings – events that can be metaphors, symbols or signs of things to come. I am a firm believer of this, as evidenced from experiences in my life. One case in point: my daughter and her eating habits as a baby and toddler. There was nothing that she wanted to eat, really, but fruit and cheese! I began to worry and wonder what in the world I would feed her. Where was she going to get her nutrients??? So, my research began. I had to find a way to get her to eat REAL food. I was then a meat eater: I partook in the average American diet – had my coffee in the mornings, sandwiches and french fries for lunch, my meat, pasta or rice, chicken and/or potatoes with bread in evenings. I even loved a soft drink once in a while!

My research lead me to the vegetarian diet because I needed to find something to feed my child. ANYTHING. So, I began to read about the protein content in beans, the health benefits of vegetables, the fiber in fruit, the harmful chemicals found in meat. Truly fascinated by what I read and by the examples of vegetarian (and vegan), fit and healthy people that I read about, I decided I needed to “go vegetarian,” so I could save my child from all the “nutrient-less” fruit she consumed. I had no choice. She needed to eat something other than fruit and cheese. I had to do this!

As I dug deeper into researching the vegetarian lifestyle, I was convinced that not only was it not harmful for my daughter to eat fruit, but it was very beneficial! And, having been diagnosed with large, painful uterine fibroids, asthma and allergies, and rosacea, I needed to do something about MY own health and not just hers. I embraced vegetarianism and slowly started to change my eating habits. I learned that feeding my child a meatless diet was OKAY, and I let her eat all the fruit she wanted. And, she took advantage! In time, I became vegan and now am embracing the raw, vegan lifestyle, so I have come full circle. Besides, it was “raw” fruit that my baby loved, wasn’t it?

There is something about a child that is pure, simple, unassuming, intuitive. Very young children have innocent minds until they are socially and environmentally conditioned. Their bodies, minds and spirits are abounding in curiosity, love and energy from the Creator; therefore, they are able to choose what is pure without reservation, question or judgment. Such is the case of my daughter, who knew, in some fashion or another, that fruit was good for her. SHE has not only changed me but propelled my life in the most fulfilling direction I could have ever dreamed of! I am truly in awe and speechless sometimes at how this part of my life (and hers) has unfolded.

Eating and experiencing all that comes with a healthy, meatless diet is beautiful and very satisfying. Every day, I am thankful, and I owe it to my precious child, my gift, who, by the way, still LOVES her tomatoes! It is said that children are not only our biggest blessings, but they are given to us for US to learn from them, if we listen.
